Hi Parents -
Two years ago, a young battle scarred Lusitano bullfighting horse named Ulme, found his way into our dressage stable. Despite his physical scars, the horse had the most affable character. His unique story inspired me to write a poem (Ulme of the Alentejo).
Last year, my wife’s 18 hh Dutch Warmblood named Noodles, was shortlisted for the Australian Dressage Team. The week before flying to Amsterdam, he went into Afib. Their tales in parallel with the book's young female protagonist, provided so many life lessons, I was compelled to bring these characters to life in "Ulme of the Alentejo."
You can read Chapter 1 from the book by clicking on the Ulme - Chapter 1 page above. A sequel is already in the works, also with Noodles, only this time he is in Bavaria, helping his older buddy Smooch get ready for the World Championships. The story is called Ghost Horse - Bavarier. More updates soon.

Lusitanos
The Lusitano Horse is originally from Portugal but today, Brazil is rapidly increasing their share of breeding these wonderful animals. Hardy, tough, smart horses they are famous for their beautiful temperament and ability to quickly learn. They are also very comfortable to ride versus some of their larger warmblood cousins, who can be very bouncy. The character Ulme in the book, is also a real life Lusitano horse bred for bullfighting. Unlike the Spanish bullfight, in the Portuguese bullfight the horses wear no protection against the massive fighting bulls featured in the story. They must survive on their agility and skills. If you'd like to learn more about Lusitanos try the following web sites: http://www.parquesdesintra.pt/en/parks-and-monuments/portuguese-school-of-equestrian-art/; http://www.horsemagazine.com/thm/2010/07/the-horses-of-portugal-part-1-%E2%80%93-the-royal-school-of-lisbon/; https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lusitano

Bullfighting References
Researching the character Anna Maria for Ulme's book, led me back into the world of Ernest Hemingway. His austere, action prose is without compare, especially when fueled by his passion for the bullfight. A web site called The Hemingway Project, written by journalist Allie Baker, grabbed my eye. Her ability to ask the most disarming questions of notable writers and historians piqued my curiosity. In an interview with Paco Pereda, June 4th 2010, he encapsulated everything I was trying to express in Anna’s character. His succinct insights into Hemingway, bullfighting, and the Iberian persona provided the foundation of ideas that evolved into the fictional character, Anna Maria.
